Three Midland-area musicians perform music for cello and piano at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 22, at Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church, 5501 Jefferson Ave., Midland.

Doug Webster, piano, and Lois Palen and Ben Bruce, cello, will perform a movement from a rarely heard suite for two cellos and piano by Menotti.

The program also features Palen and Webster in Fantasy Pieces by Schumann and the Shostakovich cello sonata; Bruce and Webster in a movement from the Saint-Saëns cello concerto; and Bruce and Palen in a sonata for two cellos by de Fesch.

Webster, a Sanford resident, earned a piano performance degree from Central Michigan University after retiring as a dentist. He also is a bassoonist who performs frequently in area ensembles.

Bruce, a junior at Midland High School, toured with the Blue Lake Orchestra in Europe last summer and is a private student of Palen’s. He is an International Baccalaureate diploma candidate at Midland High and plans to major in math.

Palen has taught and performed in Midland for 36 years. She is the director of the Midland Suzuki Education Program and the Grove Music Festival, and earned a master’s in cello performance from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

The recital is open free to the public. A reception follows.
