Beginning in Feburary 2009, the Magic Bean Cafe (5789 State Street, Saginaw) has hosted its special First Friday evenings of art and entertainment. Although the cafe offers other musical and food-related events each month, its First Fridays feature alternating performances by local musical groups and readings of poetry and prose by area writers. In addition, each month at this multi-media event, a new exhibit of original artwork begins, and the artist or artists are often on hand to chat with the art lovers in attendance.

The August 7th event features the blue-sy music of Blue Oldman and Paradox Theory, which will alternate with readings of creative works by SVSU-affiliated Dan Schell, Amelia Glebocki, and Matthew Falk. Performances will begin at 7:00 p.m. Hanging throughout the cafe, acrylic portaits collaged with sewing pattern pieces by Flint artist Amanda Simons will prompt wonder and speculation.
